Ballistics and Wound Analysis
Without a public autopsy, wound and ballistics debates rely on video, photographs, witness quotes, and the ATF's inconclusive fragment report. This page organizes mechanism-of-injury hypotheses. Tyler Robinson is the accused, not convicted.

Official narrative
Prosecutors attribute death to a .30-06 round from a Mauser Model 98 fired from the Losee Center rooftop (~120 m east). See Tyler Robinson — Weapon.
ATF autopsy fragment — inconclusive
Court filings reference Exhibit 6A, a deformed bullet jacket fragment (.30-caliber class) recovered at autopsy plus four lead fragments. September 17, 2025 ATF lab result:
- Cannot identify or exclude the seized Mauser as source
- Rifling matches numerous makes and models
Full detail: Trial and Autopsy Report.
Morphology challenges to .30-06 at distance
Citizen analysts cite:
| Issue | Argument |
|---|---|
| Neck entry path | Rooftop ~5–9° downward would likely strike face/jaw first; reported entry between larynx and trachea, left of cervical spine, more straight-on (@_DaniFesto) |
| Exit / back-spray | .30-06 from east expected catastrophic neck exit and blood on white tarp — disputed against scene descriptions |
| No-exit relay | Treating doctor reportedly said bullet did not exit ("absolute miracle") — conflicts with through-neck witness Nick |
| Shirt timing | Fabric movement before visible neck blood per video analysis |
Alternative mechanism hypotheses
1. Israeli CornerShot 9mm +P (tent)
@ProjectConstitu / Dr. Chris Martenson thread: 9mm +P from CornerShot inside tent — high-speed cavitation, necklace snap, pugilist posture, energy dumped internally without Tyler-scale exit wound. Shell casing rolling from tent cited.
2. Shaped charge / exploding mic or pendant
PETN micro-charge — inward charge emulates rifle trauma without exit; outward blast explains clasp shrapnel and rectangular neck wound. Canon XA55 reports stage detonation separate from distant muzzle blast.
3. Compressed-air / acoustic gunshot theories
Secondary audio-layer hypotheses — PA speaker injection, staged crack–thump — see Lapel Mic & Audio.
Reported physical observations
- Necklace severed with upward displacement (explosive-force framing)
- Rectangular wound shape linked to magnetic clasp projectile
- Lack of extensive back-spatter on backdrop
- Decorticate posturing / midbrain trauma in some analyses
Deeper wound catalog: Autopsy — Wound Theories.
Needed forensic work
- Public autopsy: wound track, caliber, residue (gunpowder + explosive)
- Trajectory rods and 3D scene reconstruction (tent, stairwell south, rooftop east)
- Ballistic gel at reported distances through barriers
- Authenticate any tent shell casing in video
Citizen Investigator Claims on X (Wound & Ballistics)
(The following are attributed public claims and counter-claims — not findings of this site.)
Citizen investigators continue to argue that wound morphology and the ATF fragment record do not cleanly support a distant .30-06 rooftop kill, while others insist autopsy and hearing evidence do.
- According to @HarkjJytte on X (July 2026), the “bullet finding” in court does not settle mechanism: the user argues fragments may confirm a projectile without proving a Mauser match, and continues to favor a RØDE wireless mic explosion framing. This is an attributed opinion, not a court finding.
- According to @MarioNawfal (Sept 25, 2025), mainstream autopsy explanation is no exit wound because the bullet lodged under the skin; the post frames conspiracy claims about “missing exit” as misunderstanding ballistics and notes Utah ME backlog / reports withheld during trial. Source cited in that thread: Laurenthemortician / PBS framing.
- According to @stratagemmer (July 6, 2026), state witness Agent David Hull testified that an autopsy was performed the evening of September 10 by a male pathologist named (as Hull spelled it) Dr. Guajardo; cause of death listed as homicide by gunshot wound to the neck; the judge reportedly ruled the autopsy report not public. Defense objections to reliability/hearsay were described as overruled. Unverified beyond X court-watch notes.
- According to @alexboge (July 9, 2026), exploding-mic/shaped-charge theories fail physics (standoff, fabric not torn, no soot/flash in multi-angle video) and must now also explain bullet fragments entered at the July 6, 2026 preliminary hearing.

Interesting In This Area
- Reported entry sits between larynx and trachea, left of the cervical spine.
- The state's brief calls the path downward on the page quoting C2 damage.
- A surgeon and a cardiologist both said the rooftop geometry does not work.
- The spinal cord would settle it, and its whereabouts are unclear.
Interesting In Other Areas
- A .30-06 carries roughly 3,950 joules; a 9mm carries 482.
- The recovered jacket fragment measured .286 to .301 inches in testimony.
- Broadcast audio reportedly separates two events about 120 and 46 metres away.
- An infrared laser on a phone screen reportedly traces to a grey van.
