RØDE Wireless PRO — The Microphone on Kirk's Shirt
The RØDE Wireless PRO lavalier microphone system was the device clipped to Charlie Kirk's shirt at the September 10, 2025 Utah Valley University event. Investigators examining the exploding mic theory have focused on this device as the potential vehicle for a concealed explosive charge — specifically, a small shaped charge or EFP (explosively formed penetrator) hidden inside or attached to the transmitter unit.
What Is the RØDE Wireless PRO
The RØDE Wireless PRO is a professional-grade wireless lavalier (lapel) microphone system designed for broadcast, events, and public speaking. The system consists of:
- Transmitter (TX): A small rectangular unit clipped to the speaker's clothing or belt. Dimensions approximately 2 inches by 2 inches. Contains the battery, wireless transmitter electronics, and the magnetic clasp hardware for attaching the capsule microphone to clothing.
- Receiver (RX): A complementary unit attached to the audio mixing board or camera, receiving the wireless audio signal.
- Capsule microphone: A small lavalier capsule connected to the transmitter via a short cable, typically clipped to the collar or chest area.
The transmitter unit is the focus of the explosion theory. Its dimensions — approximately 2 inches square — are consistent with the square-shaped object reportedly photographed in Butch Hibbs's pocket in pre-event photos. Investigators have noted the dimensional match between the Rode Wireless PRO transmitter (~2"×2") and the object visible in Hibbs's pocket.
The Unusual Placement Under the Shirt
Phillip Goldsberry Jr. was the AV team member who placed the microphone on Kirk at the UVU event. Investigators flagged an anomaly: the transmitter was placed under Kirk's shirt, with routing underneath the fabric — unusual for this equipment:
- The RØDE Wireless PRO transmitter has a furry windscreen designed for outdoor use on top of clothing
- Standard TPUSA event setup consistently placed Kirk's lavalier mic on the outside of his shirt in multiple previous events captured on video
- Placing the transmitter under the shirt conceals the device from view and positions it directly against the body
The decision to route the mic under Kirk's shirt, if intentional, would have maximized the blast effect of any device hidden inside the transmitter — while also ensuring the device was not visible to Kirk, his security detail, or event bystanders.
The Magnetic Clasp as a Projectile
The RØDE Wireless PRO uses a magnetic clasp system to attach the transmitter and capsule to clothing. This clasp is a small, black rectangular piece of hardware — metal with magnetic properties.
Jon Bray's frame-by-frame analysis of the UVU event video identifies a black rectangular object being ejected from the mic/chest area and tracked through the neck wound. The object's dimensions, color, and trajectory in the footage are consistent with the RØDE magnetic clasp being expelled at high velocity by an explosion from within the transmitter housing.
If a shaped charge inside the transmitter detonated, the magnetic clasp — already a rigid, dense metal object — would function as a fragment or improvised projectile, producing exactly the rectangular wound pattern described in public accounts of Kirk's neck injury.
Why This Mic and Why This Setup
The RØDE Wireless PRO is a commercially available, widely used piece of professional audio equipment. It would not raise suspicion at a sound check or equipment inspection. A device substituted for or hidden within a real RØDE transmitter would appear identical to the legitimate equipment used at every other TPUSA event.
The combination of factors — commercially available equipment, an unusual under-shirt placement, a transmitter with internal space for a small concealed device, and a magnetic clasp capable of acting as a projectile — makes the RØDE Wireless PRO transmitter a plausible physical vehicle for the assassination method described in the video analysis.
Butch Hibbs and the Pre-Event Photo
Butch Hibbs was reportedly present with Kirk at the UVU event in the pre-event period. Photographs from before the assassination reportedly show a square object in Hibbs's pocket whose dimensions are consistent with the RØDE Wireless PRO transmitter (~2"×2"). Investigators have raised the question: was Hibbs carrying the transmitter unit before it was placed on Kirk, and if so, why?
This question connects to the broader chain-of-custody question for the microphone: who had access to the transmitter before the event, and who had it placed on Kirk specifically under his shirt rather than on the outside?
