Chain 5: Panguitch Breaks the Evening Manhunt
:::caution Attributed claims only Tyler Robinson is charged, not convicted, and presumed innocent. The Panguitch identification is claimed by restaurant staff and contested. It has not been authenticated in court. The restaurant later said it has no evidence establishing whether he was there. This page is a chain of inference from public statements, a photographed receipt, and a road atlas. :::
The conclusion this chain reaches
Geography does not bend to retelling. If the man at Cowboy's Smokehouse between roughly 8:55 and 9:47 PM on September 10, 2025 was Tyler Robinson, then the Orem-area evening texts and the real-time manhunt attributed to him that night are physically impossible.
This is the chain that does not need a ballistics expert. It needs a calculator. The long-form record is Panguitch — The Town That Breaks the Timeline.
Link 1 — Panguitch is 209 road miles from Orem
Utah Valley University is in Orem. Cowboy's Smokehouse is in Panguitch, Garfield County. The drive is about 200–209 road miles, 3 hours 10 minutes to 3 hours 40 minutes on I-15 south and the connecting routes. Panguitch is not on the way from Orem to St. George / Washington, Robinson's home area. A stop there is a detour, not a layover.
Strength: strong. Miles are miles.
Link 2 — Staff said they served the quiet man at the counter
Staff have said, on camera and (per Fox News Digital, January 17, 2026) to the FBI the next day, that a quiet customer matching the released photos ate a medium-rare sirloin alone at the counter the night of September 10. Citizen journalist @DiligentDenizen has published interviews with servers and, on August 14, 2026, a photographed receipt the servers attribute to that meal (status/2088391649923645555). On August 26, 2026, the same account said a Salt Lake City attorney was submitting witness identities, the receipt with POS details, and recorded testimony through official channels (status/2092416813183488053, 10,900 likes).
The photographed ticket is Cowboy's Smokehouse Check #211: ordered around 8:55 PM, paid 9:47 PM on a Visa Debit, leaving near closing, ~10:00 PM. Some posts use 8:47–9:55 PM. A server has said on camera he took the card, that 9:47 "sounds about right," and that the identification is "100%." The window is the dinner hour, not the shooting hour — the shooting was 12:23 PM, and nobody serious treats Panguitch as an alibi for noon. If the diner is Robinson, the after-11 PM Orem-area Twiggs manhunt texts are the thing that breaks: a 209-mile return does not land before ~1:00–1:40 AM.
Strength: moderate. Staff identification of a stranger from later FBI photos is a known error class. A receipt with POS detail is a different quality of object, and it has not been authenticated in court.
Link 3 — The state's evening needs him in the Orem area
The charging narrative and the roommate / Lance Twiggs text layer put Robinson in the Orem area through the evening of the 10th — the manhunt texts, the "I'm going to take it" note as presented, the Dairy Queen claim. The 33-hour manhunt is contested at both ends; this chain is about the middle.
A photographed claim of an Orem Dairy Queen stop around 5:38–6:38 PM is the collision. Commentators on X (e.g. @JohnMcCloy, August 29, 2026) argue that a 6:38 PM Orem DQ makes an 8:45 PM Panguitch arrival require a sustained ~99 mph. That is the state's best geographical counter: if the DQ photo is him at that time, Panguitch loses. If Panguitch is him at that time, the DQ photo and the evening texts lose. They cannot both be.
Strength: the collision is strong; which side of it is true is the whole dispute.
Link 4 — The texts that "prove" an Orem evening are the same texts Panguitch would impeach
Investigators amplifying the alibi argue that a man sitting in Panguitch at 9 PM did not send the Orem-area night-of messages attributed to him, and that Lance Twiggs's testimony about those messages would be impeached by a authenticated receipt. That is exactly how @DiligentDenizen framed the August 26 submission.
Strength: this link is only as strong as Link 2. A mistaken-identity dinner impeaches nothing.
Link 5 — The official follow-up has not publicly settled it
Fox's January 2026 piece said agents interviewed the owner and servers and obtained partial card details (last four digits), with technical issues limiting follow-up and no usable counter camera. The restaurant's July 2026 Facebook statement said: "Based on the information currently available to us, we have no evidence establishing whether Tyler Robinson was at our restaurant around September 10, 2025." Ian Wendt, posting August 31, 2026, said the owner told him a waiter thought he saw Robinson, that they gave everything to the FBI, and that they were then told not to say any more (quoted by Diligent Denizen).
That is not a court finding in either direction. It is a receipt, a card, and a camera that nobody with subpoena power has put on a public table.
Strength: moderate as a process fact. Unresolved is not confirmed.
Link 6 — Why this chain is a different kind of object than the others
Heart-versus-neck is a contest over description. Panguitch is a contest over place. Description bends; 209 miles does not. That is why the Narrative overview calls it the most interesting story in the section, and why the antibody reaction on X in late August 2026 — people arguing the defense "would have used it if it were real" versus people arguing discovery has not been produced — is itself evidence that the claim is load-bearing. People do not fight this hard over a nothing.
Strength: this is a comment on the argument, not a new fact.
Where the chain lands
If staff and the receipt are right, Robinson was 209 miles from the Orem manhunt at dinner on the night of the killing. The evening texts, the DQ stop, and any "he was still in the metro sending messages" layer cannot survive that. If staff and the receipt are wrong, this chain is a case of ordinary mistaken identity plus a viral screenshot, and it should be retired.
Citizen investigators have treated it as live from the January Fox piece through August 2026 filings talk. The government's public account has not produced the card, the camera, or a signed exclusion. Until one of those three exists, the chain sits here as the geographical veto on the night-of story.
The strongest objection to this whole chain
Mistaken identity is the base rate. A quiet young man at a counter, FBI photos the next day, a small-town staff sure they remember — that is how false identifications are born. The restaurant itself later declined to stand behind a confirmation. The defense has not (publicly, as of this writing) made Panguitch its alibi in a filed motion, and commentators treat that silence as a tell. A 5:38 PM Orem DQ photo, if authenticated as him, ends the dinner. None of that is trivial.
The answer this page gives is the same as the rest of the site: the material that would settle it — the full card, the POS log, the counter camera, Robinson's phone location — is in government or merchant hands and has not been produced.
What would settle it
- The full card authorization with name, last four, time, and terminal ID.
- The counter camera, if it ever existed, with retention log.
- Phone location / tower / geofence for the evening of September 10.
- A defense filing that uses it, or a state filing that excludes it with exhibits.
