The contradiction at the source
On September 16, 2025, in Senate Judiciary Committee testimony, FBI Director Kash Patel said the Bureau was investigating "anyone and everyone involved in that Discord chat" — more than twenty users — and was examining the possibility of accomplices. Those are not the words of an agency that has closed a lone-gunman case. They are the words of an agency that thinks the shooter may not have been alone.
Within a very short period the public posture had nonetheless settled into a lone-gunman account. The intervening step — the one where the twenty-plus people were investigated and cleared, and the accomplice possibility was examined and closed — has never been shown to the public. The investigation has not seen a document in which that work is reported.
The halted foreign review
Former National Counterterrorism Center director Joe Kent has said on the record that his centre was examining foreign-nexus leads in this case, including Charlie Kirk's disputes with pro-Israel donors, and that the review was ordered to stop. That account is set out at Joe Kent and the foreign-inquiry shutdown, the NCTC probe halted, and Patel shut down the Kent probe.
Separately, former Green Beret and CIA contractor Mike Glover has said publicly on the Mike Drop podcast that investigators who flew into Utah were "denied access and told to turn around and fly away."
An investigation that is stopped has not concluded that there was nothing there. It has concluded nothing at all. Those are different states, and the public account merges them.
What "acting alone" has to absorb
The lone-gunman finding has to be big enough to contain everything else in this case, and it is not obvious that it is. It has to absorb a halted foreign-ties review; an Army HADES surveillance aircraft over the campus corridor that day; foreign-registered phones reported clustered at UVU; a documented donor rupture 48 hours before; reported warnings from Charlie Kirk himself that he expected to be killed; a courtyard excavated and paved within days; and a wave of resignations and terminations afterwards.
None of those individually proves a conspiracy. Every single one of them is a thing a lone-gunman finding has to explain away, and the official account has not tried.
The counterarguments, stated fairly
Investigators say "we are looking at accomplices" in the first week of every high-profile case, because they are obligated to and because they do not yet know. Ruling it out later is the normal outcome, not a suspicious one. Twenty Discord users being interviewed and none being charged is what a thorough negative result looks like.
Lone-actor political violence is also genuinely common in the United States, and the historical base rate favours it heavily over conspiracy. The strongest honest criticism here is not that the lone-gunman finding is false — it is that the work supporting it has not been shown, and that a named former official says a specific line of inquiry was closed by order rather than by evidence. Those are process complaints, and process complaints are the ones that are actually fixable.
What would settle it
- Publish the disposition of all 20-plus Discord users — interviewed, cleared, on what basis.
- Produce the NCTC direction that ended the foreign-ties review, and the review's work product to that date.
- Take Joe Kent's and Mike Glover's accounts under oath in an open hearing.
- Disclose every federal aircraft, drone, and collection asset operating over Utah County on September 10, 2025.
