9. The clothing and weapon on the roof versus the campus scout videos

Attributed claims only

Tyler Robinson is charged, not convicted, has not entered a guilty plea, and is presumed innocent. Witness descriptions here come from 911 audio, dispatch radio, and interviews, not sworn testimony. This site makes no claim that any witness, officer, or agent said anything untrue, and it does not claim to identify the rooftop figure.

The issue in plain words​

On the morning of September 10, 2025, campus cameras recorded a young man the state says was Tyler Robinson walking around UVU. Investigators call these the scout videos, because the state treats them as him looking over the site. In them he wears casual clothes: a maroon shirt and shorts in the morning, and a black long-sleeve shirt and jeans later. See UVU surveillance and campus scout walker identity.

The first voices after the shot described someone very different. So this issue asks: does the person on the roof match the person in the scout videos? And does the rifle described on the roof match the Mauser in court?

The fed slop side, in full​

Official-side commentators say the sequence is simple. A T-shirt-and-jeans scout walks the campus, changes clothes, then goes to the roof. The tactical language in the 911 calls is either reconcilable with ordinary dark clothing or simply mistaken, because frightened callers get details wrong. And the rifle in court, the towel-wrapped Mauser found in the woods, is the rifle.

That has force. Eyewitness descriptions under stress are notoriously unreliable, video compression shifts colors, and one caller's "tactical" can be another's "black shirt." The reported texts even mention a change of outfits in the woods. Count 4 of the September 1, 2026 bind-over is obstruction for concealing or removing the clothing worn during the shooting — the state is all-in on a clothes change. What citizen investigators say​

Citizen investigators say the descriptions are too consistent, and too early, to dismiss as stress garbled. On September 11, 2025, the dispatch audio was posted publicly. A female dispatcher:

"He's going to be wearing all black, black long gun, black tactical helmet, a black mask, possibly wearing a tactical vest and jeans."

Another unit put the person on the far north side of a building east of the library in jeans, black shirt, black mask, long rifle. PEOPLE magazine and CBS ran the same radio. The first voices are collected at 911 calls and the rooftop witness. How the all-black figure later dropped out of the story is Black-Clad Suspect Dropped. The man who filmed the roof figure said "It was all tactical. He definitely had a face mask on," that all skin was covered, and that he was about 175 yards away. According to Candace Owens, the witness, who she says teaches people to shoot, says the rifle he saw does not match the one presented in court. A worker at a nearby construction site, relayed through a coworker, described a man after the woods still in all black, with a trench coat, a mask, and a small backpack, even though the texts say he changed outfits there. Frame-by-frame clothing comparison is at black clothing vs jeans. How the figure moved — lateral crawl, practiced egress — is the tactical roof run. Investigators also question the rifle: a Mauser 98 is roughly 44 inches long, and they argue it does not fit the backpack seen in the stills. That argument is backpack and rifle impossibility.

Their conclusion: the shorts-and-T-shirt scout and the firing kit are two different people, or a costume change the state has never proved with footage. Ryan Matta asked in August 2026 when the public would see the video of Robinson changing clothes on the roof. It has not been released. The 911-kit row is dispatch clothing. There is still no video of anyone firing.

When this fight ran​

  • September 10–12, 2025. Dispatch audio is public within 24 hours: all-black, helmet, mask, vest, long gun. Official-side coverage then shifted to the casual scout stills and the FBI person-of-interest photos.
  • Late September 2025. The roof witness's tactical-kit account begins circulating through Owens.
  • July 2026 hearing. The state leans on campus video of casual clothes plus a clothes-change theory. The roof witness is still uncalled.
  • July 29–30, 2026. Owens's Losee CCTV: a figure in dark kit, lateral crawl. Investigators treat that as the firing kit; official-side accounts treat it as Robinson after a change.
  • September 1, 2026 bind-over. Count 4 writes the clothes change into the charging theory.

Why it matters for Tyler Robinson​

If the person on the roof was not dressed like Robinson and did not carry the gun found in the woods, then the video identification and the physical evidence point at different people. That is the classic shape of a setup: one person seen, another person acting. Investigators say the state has to show the change of clothes, not assume it. What would settle it​

  • Native-resolution video of every camera between the scout sightings and the roof, showing any clothing change.
  • The full 911 and dispatch recordings with times, released by the agencies.
  • The rooftop witness's video and campus report, and his testimony under oath.
  • Evidence logs for any tactical clothing, helmet, mask, or vest recovered.
  • The roof clothes-change footage Agent Hull described, if it exists.
