33. Expected behavior of a .30-06 from 142-175 yards (~415 ft)

Attributed claims only

Nothing on this page claims that any medical examiner, laboratory, agent, or prosecutor misstated evidence or acted improperly. Tyler Robinson is claimed to be the shooter; he is charged, not convicted, has not entered a guilty plea, and is presumed innocent. The rooftop .30-06 is the government's narrative. Most citizen investigators conclude Charlie Kirk was killed by an exploding microphone.

The issue in plain words

The government's narrative says Charlie Kirk was killed by one .30-06 Springfield round fired from a Mauser bolt-action rifle on the Losee Center roof. Estimates of the distance on this site run from about 142 to 175 yards, around 415 feet. The witness who filmed the roof figure put it at about 175 yards. The Mauser .30-06 is the court rifle.

A .30-06 is a large hunting and military rifle cartridge. It leaves the muzzle at roughly 2,700 to 2,900 feet per second with around 2,800 to 2,914 foot-pounds of energy, about 3,950 joules. For comparison, a common 9mm handgun round carries about 356 foot-pounds, about 482 joules. At under 200 yards, very little of the rifle round's energy is lost before it arrives. Those numbers are on .30-06 Energy Mismatch.

So the question is simple physics. What should that round do to a human neck at that distance, and does the official wound picture look like that? Investigators conclude it does not, and that the death was caused by an explosive at the microphone.

Side by side

Fed Slop SideA neck hit with fragments is what happened. Internet ballistics are not the medical examiner.
Citizen InvestigatorsThat cartridge at that distance should not produce the official wound picture. Energy, exit and tissue damage are off, so the official gun or the official range is off. Investigators conclude an explosive at the microphone.

The fed slop side, in full

The 142-yard figure itself comes from official-side reconstructions that put the prone position on the Losee roof about 130 meters from the tent. Independent estimates on this site run higher, to about 175 yards, because that is what the roof witness described. Either number is still "almost muzzle energy" for a .30-06. The official side says real wounds do not follow gun-forum rules. A bullet can strike bone, break apart, and stay inside. The medical examiner recorded a gunshot wound of the neck, and fragments consistent with a .30-caliber jacket were recovered during the autopsy. Watermelon tests and energy charts are not autopsies. People without medical training should not overrule the examiner who actually looked at the body.

A July 10, 2026 commentary in a conservative outlet put the strongest form of this case: hunters take deer and elk with .30-06, .308, and .30-30 soft points all the time; neck and spine hits frequently produce no exit; a large man with dense cervical muscle and bone can stop or fragment a cup-and-core bullet; "a .30-06 always exits" is the lie feeding the rest of the theories. Official-side commentators after the July 6 hearing listed "single gunshot wound to the neck with .30-06 bullet fragments" as closed. Fact-check pieces in September 2026 repeated that examiners recovered a fragment and found no explosive residue.

The ATF's "indeterminate" tool-mark result on the jacket fragment, they say, is ordinary for a deformed piece. The spent casing is tied to the Mauser. Class-level .30-caliber on the fragment is enough. See how the official narrative states this on Fed Claim: A .30-06 Round Killed Him. Brian Harpole, the security chief, said on a later podcast that he treated the visible left-neck wound, checked the other side in the vehicle, and saw no second hole — used on this side as eyewitness support for a retained bullet.

What citizen investigators say

Investigators say this is not a matter of impression. A round with that energy passing through a neck normally produces massive tissue disruption and, in most cases, a large exit. The record as described instead shows a contained track down the left side of the neck, fragments inside, and no clean exit. A widely shared line said the treating surgeon called it "an absolute miracle" that the bullet stopped, but that reached the public only second-hand, with no named doctor on record — see Hospital People and Bullet Claims. Ryan Matta, in October 2025, called the "man of steel" neck that stopped a .30-06 a lie. Project Constitution, in April 2026, quoted Charlie's grandfather's reported remark that what happened is not what a .30-06 does, and said people calling from the hospital had described a neck "obliterated" that later video did not show.

The fragment did not settle it either. The ATF examined it and reported a class-level result consistent with a .30-caliber projectile. It could not identify or exclude the seized Mauser. That is ATF Fragment Inconclusive and ATF Inconclusive Ballistics. Reaching next for comparative bullet-lead analysis — a method the FBI abandoned in 2005 — is treated on Ballistics Sealed and CBLA and FBI Ballistics & Forensics.

From September 2025 onward, citizen investigators posting on X kept making the same point. In their words, it is "impossible" for a neck to stop a .30-06 at that range without an exit. The comparison they keep drawing is scale: a human neck is a few inches of tissue, not a deer chest. A 180-grain round at ~2,700 fps arriving with almost all of its 3,950 joules is, on their numbers, eight times a 9mm. If that energy had nowhere to go except through the neck, they ask where the spray, the exit, and the tent-side destruction went. Gun & Bullet Analysis is the hub for that arithmetic. Ali Zreik's August 2026 thread, collected as Six Forensic Physics Phenomena, argued light refraction, a pre-wound flinch, absent cavitation, radial fabric expansion, the necklace's final position, and acceleration physics all point to a shaped charge in the RØDE microphone rather than a rifle wound. No Blood Spray, No Exit Wound is the most-repeated objection in the case. Deer-and-elk analogies, investigators say, compare a thin human neck to a much thicker animal body and skip what a 3,950-joule round does when it does not have a torso to dump into.

Shape Charge vs Bullet then maps the July 2026 injury list — both chest cavities, the heart, two brain regions, airway cartilages — against one rifle round. Investigators conclude the official gun or the official range is wrong, and that the death was caused by an explosive at the microphone on Charlie's chest and collar. That is the full chain: why it was not a .30-06, and a pillar of .30-06 Did Not Kill Charlie.

When this fight ran

  • 10–16 September 2025. Immediate "that is not a .30-06" posts. Energy charts and no-exit arguments start within days of the official Mauser announcement.
  • October 2025. "Man of steel" / miracle-stop pushback. Ryan Matta and others treat the hospital line as unsourced.
  • April 2026. Project Constitution and Candace Owens episodes on intact-neck versus obliterated-neck hospital claims.
  • 6–11 July 2026. Hearing fragments-in-the-neck testimony. Official-side "soft point, bone, no exit" articles land within days (notably 10 July).
  • August 2026. Six-phenomena physics thread. Investigator side treats energy mismatch as settled against the rifle.
  • August debate window and 8 September 2026 fact-checks. Official-side outlets reuse "ME homicide by GSW, fragment recovered" as a complete answer to the energy argument.

Why it matters for Tyler Robinson

The charge against Tyler Robinson depends on the rooftop rifle being the thing that killed Charlie Kirk. If that round at that distance cannot produce the recorded wound, the rifle, even if it was fired, may not be the cause of death. That would break the link between the man on the roof and the killing itself. See Proof Not Tyler.

What would settle it

  • The full autopsy report, with the wound track, fragment locations, and any exit, reviewed by independent pathologists.
  • The fragments themselves, weighed and examined by defense experts.
  • Controlled ballistic tests of the seized rifle and ammunition at the stated range, into realistic tissue simulants.
  • The raw multitrack audio from the event, to test whether the decisive sound came from the roof or the tent.
