Samantha Karner
:::caution Legal Disclaimer Nothing on this page alleges wrongdoing by Samantha Karner. She is a living ATF examiner who testified under oath. An inconclusive ballistics result is a scientific report outcome — not proof of conspiracy and not a finding of innocence. Tyler Robinson is charged, not convicted. :::

Connection to the Charlie Kirk Case
Karner's report sits at the center of the forensic fight over whether the bullet that killed Charlie Kirk can be toolmark-matched to the rifle the State attributes to Tyler Robinson.
The inconclusive jacket comparison
- Item: bullet jacket fragment recovered at autopsy / from the body (as described in filings and hearing coverage).
- Comparison: seized Mauser-pattern .30-06 bolt-action rifle from the wooded area near UVU.
- Result: inconclusive — the fragment could not be identified or excluded as having been fired from that rifle.
- Karner's live testimony (CNN / pool): she was "unable to say one way or another" because of a lack of microscopic marks on the jacket fragment.
- The defense called her so that limitation would be sworn in open court, not buried in a sealed paper.
What is not the same as the jacket result
Do not collapse all ATF work into the jacket outcome:
- ATF work on cartridge casings and the Dremel tool (home search items presented via Jennifer Faumuina) is reported separately and used by the State for rifle association.
- ATF DNA on the rifle itself is Caitlin Oliver's domain (Day 5), not Karner's toolmarks.
- FBI DNA on towel/screwdriver is Amanda Bakker (Day 2).
March 2026 sealing fight
Before the prelim, defense filings and a ~03/10/2026 seal fight (calendar page) focused public attention on the ATF ballistics paper. A media coalition opposed sealing. Later coverage describes the report as unsealed while remaining inconclusive. That sequence is why Karner's July live appearance is treated as a transparency and reliability stress test — not as proof of a plot by Karner or ATF.
Defense strategy context
CNN's week takeaways note the defense called three forensic experts (Bakker, Karner, Oliver) to attack DNA and ballistics reliability. Karner is the toolmark leg of that triangle. Michael Burt is repeatedly named as the defense attorney driving forensic semantics and quality challenges.

X / public commentary (attributed)
Citizen investigators treat Karner's inconclusive as the fracture in the "bullet from that Mauser killed him" story. Official-aligned commentary stresses that probable cause can rest on other evidence (surveillance, DNA mixtures, texts). This page documents the testimony and the debate — it does not adjudicate guilt.
