Zachariah "Zach" Qureshi is a young man whose name surfaced in the first hours after the September 10, 2025 shooting at Utah Valley University because, according to circulated reports, he was detained near the event and then released. He was never charged as the shooter. He is the brother of Zane Qureshi and a son of Ahmed Qureshi. The image at right accompanied a July 18, 2026 X post that named both brothers.

Names he goes by

Public commentary refers to him under several spellings and forms. To keep the site to one profile for one person, all of these point here:

  • Zachariah Ahmed Qureshi — the fullest form seen in public discussion.
  • Zachariah Qureshi, Zach Qureshi, Zach Kureshi, Zach Quershi — common short and misspelled variants seen in posts and scanner discussion.
  • His public LinkedIn handle is reported as zach-qureshi.

Other unverified "possible name" guesses have been floated in early threads. Those are speculative and are not treated as confirmed identities here.

Background as reported

These biographical details come from social-media summaries and a report attributed to journalist Karol Markowicz. They are not independently confirmed here:

  • A man in his mid-twenties, described as an Arabic speaker.
  • Reported work as a finance/VC analyst and a past Heritage Foundation association.
  • Reported ties to Utah (Salt Lake City), with schooling references including Utah State University and BYU in various threads.

Where he was and what happened

The verifiable, non-accusatory arc — the part favorable to Qureshi — is that he was reportedly detained and then released, and never charged as the shooter:

  • Commentary referencing local press describes him as detained at or near the event on September 10, 2025, then released, with a brief hold connected to an obstruction question.
  • Federal leadership reportedly named a suspect "in custody" and then stepped that back roughly 90 minutes later. Whether Qureshi was the person referenced in those earliest statements is not established. Commentators (including Brig. Gen. Blaine Holt) have asked whether that 90-minute window slowed the manhunt — an open question, not a proven fact. See the detailed FBI "in custody" page.
  • His name also appears in a police-scanner "hospital to hospital" story whose details (vehicle color, who went where, whether anyone did) reportedly keep changing. The full breakdown, with attribution, lives on the Distraction People profile. None of it establishes that Qureshi did anything wrong.

Family

  • Father: Ahmed Qureshi — described in commentary as a U.S. Navy Captain (O-6) and co-founder of Bilt Inc. Inclusion is context only; no wrongdoing is asserted.
  • Brother: Zane Qureshi — named alongside Zach in the July 18, 2026 X post below.
  • There is a third brother referenced in public commentary, and a father who anchors the family; a fuller family page may be added over time.
