This single screenshot explains a great deal about why the N888KG thread looks the way it does. The tail number is enrolled in the FAA's data-limiting programme, so mainstream trackers show nothing at all -- which is why researchers turned to ADS-B Exchange, which does not honour those blocks, and why the two sources disagree so completely about whether this aircraft has any flight history.
It also frames the "went dark" claim more carefully than the posts do. An aircraft that is blocked from public display can appear to vanish for reasons that have nothing to do with the transponder. Being blocked is a routine privacy election available to any US registrant and implies nothing about the owner or about any flight.
