Meme: A Neck Stopping a .30-06
What This Image Shows
A two-panel internet meme, watermarked Freedom Memes, captured with the iOS markup sidebar still visible. The top panel is the same labelled skull and cervical spine diagram used throughout this cluster, with a red line traced along an erratic path. The bottom panel is a cartoon of an anthropomorphic blue JET FUEL barrel next to a nervous grey steel beam saying I'M MELTING.
The caption runs across both panels: a human neck stopping a .30-06 is the same level of absurdity as jet fuel melting steel beams. It is rhetoric rather than analysis, and it borrows its force from a much older argument rather than making a new one.
It is kept because it captures, in the compressed form that actually travelled, the objection that drives much of this cluster: that a .30-06 round carries roughly 3,950 joules at the muzzle against about 482 joules for a 9mm, and that a projectile with that much energy is not expected to stop inside a neck and upper chest. Whether the recovered fragmentation pattern is consistent with that expectation is genuinely disputed — some analysts argue a soft-point round should be expected to fragment. Both sides are set out at .30-06 Energy Mismatch and Alternative Calibers and Weapons.
