The composite is an argument made by juxtaposition: appointment in May, sworn in August, capital case in October. Both halves are official or mainstream sources and both dates are accurate.
What the pairing does not supply is any mechanism. Judges are assigned cases by court administration, the vacancy predates the shooting by months, and the KUTV story frames the assignment as happenstance.
