So this chart shows a small pre-event reading dwarfed by the post-event surge, which is exactly what an unremarkable series should look like.

Including it matters. A cluster that only preserved dramatic spikes would be selecting its own evidence; keeping the modest readings is what lets a reader judge the rest.
