George Zinn Detained — Facing the Camera

The man is George Hodgson Zinn, then 71, the first person taken into custody after Charlie Kirk was shot at Utah Valley University on September 10, 2025. According to the Utah County Sheriff's Office, Zinn shouted words to the effect of "I shot him, now shoot me" while officers were still trying to locate the shooter. Utah Department of Public Safety Commissioner Beau Mason stated publicly that Zinn was cleared as the shooter the same day.
Per police, when questioned Zinn said he made the claim to draw attention away from the real shooter. That on-the-record account is why the word "distraction" is used seriously in this investigation rather than loosely. Separately, Candace Owens reported that Zinn told hospital staff he had been paid to be a decoy — an unverified claim reported here as hers. Zinn has not been charged in connection with the shooting.
