Researchers matched the wood-stocked profile seen in the Provo arrest frames against this model listing and concluded the recovered item was a .177 caliber pellet air rifle, not a firearm. The green arrow points at the same buttstock feature the green arrow points at in the arrest frame filed nearby, which is the whole comparison.
The significance claimed is one of scale. An air rifle is not a weapon capable of the shot described in this case, so identifying the recovered item this way is an argument that the Provo arrest could never have been the shooter and that reporting which blurred the two was misleading.
