What This Image Shows​

A wider, eye-level view of the same Provo stop. A black lamppost splits the frame. Police vehicles sit behind it with blue emergency lights flashing. Several officers are visible — one kneeling on the sidewalk, another standing while holding a rifle in gloved hands.

This frame is the one that shows the scene rather than a detail: multiple units, a downtown street, an item being handled as an exhibit in the open. Together with the annotated close-up in this cluster it indicates that a long gun was handled at this stop and appears to have been treated as an exhibit; what was booked, and under what case number, has not been published.

What the frame does not establish is what the item was. The identification circulated afterward is that it was a .177 caliber break-barrel air rifle rather than a firearm — the point of the product-listing screenshot filed nearby. Early reporting on the day of the shooting was confused about how many people were in custody and what had been recovered, and researchers argue that confusion was never properly cleared up on the record.
