They Just Found the Guy Right Outside Carry-On

What This Image Shows

A blurry video still on a city sidewalk. Police officers detain a handcuffed man. A black and white Provo Police SUV is parked partly on the curb at the right with blue emergency lights on. A bicycle rests on its kickstand in the foreground. Commercial buildings line the far side of the street.

The on-screen caption is the part that matters: "I think they just found the guy right outside of carry-on." That is a bystander filming in real time and saying, in the moment, that the person police were looking for had just been found.

Two things follow. First, it locates the scene — Carry On is a business on the W Center St block mapped in the Location sub-cluster, which is how these frames were geolocated. Second, it records what people on the street believed was happening: that the manhunt had ended, in Provo, within about an hour of the shooting. It had not. The man detained here was never publicly identified and has not been charged in connection with the shooting, and the actual suspect was not taken into custody until the following day. The bystander's belief is evidence of the confusion, not of guilt. See Pellet Gun Man and Timeline.
