The Marseille Cap in Close Up
What This Image Shows
A close vertical frame of a young man on a bright day, mouth wide open mid-sentence or mid-shout, the upper half of his face shadowed by a curved cap brim. He has a light complexion, thick dark curly hair pushing out from the sides of the cap, and light stubble. The background is heavily blurred, consistent with a crowded outdoor gathering.
The cap is the whole reason this frame exists in the file. It is khaki-crowned with a dark curved brim and carries three embroidered lines: "MARSEILLE" in curved serif capitals, a small black patch reading "EST. 600 BC", and "FRENCH RIVIERA" in block letters below.
A specific, unusual piece of headwear is one of the few genuinely reliable ways to track an unidentified person across separate photographs taken the same day, which is why researchers latched onto it.
