The crop is deliberate: the head of the man on the left has been removed, which is how images of this kind are prepared when the point being made is about the other person or about clothing rather than about Kirk. The green plaid shirt here is the same garment that appears in the second image in this sub-cluster with a wireless receiver clipped to its pocket, which is the whole reason both are filed together.
