This is a reference photograph rather than evidence, and its job is to fix real dimensions in the reader's mind. Investigation notes give the usable internal length of the pack at about 17 inches. The recovered weapon is a Mauser Model 98 in .30-06 with a mounted scope: roughly 43 to 49 inches assembled, and still about 28 to 32 inches as a barreled action once the stock is removed — a job that requires a screwdriver, since the rifle is not a tool-free takedown design. Researchers argue from those figures that the rifle could not have travelled inside this pack, and that the state's account therefore needs either another person or a weapon already on site.
