About This Cluster

Investigators say a Mauser Model 98 bolt-action rifle in .30-06, fitted with a scope and wrapped in a dark towel, was recovered in a wooded area north of the UVU campus after the September 10, 2025 shooting. That find anchors the state's weapon narrative, which makes the photographs of the rifle, the drop area, and the surrounding terrain some of the most examined images in the case.

The charging affidavit describes engraved casings found with the rifle — "hey fascist! CATCH!" and "O Bella ciao" among them — and Discord messages it attributes to Robinson about leaving a rifle wrapped in a towel at a drop point. Researchers dispute the physical logistics: a Mauser 98 broken down is still roughly 30 inches long, which critics argue could not fit inside the backpack seen in the surveillance stills, and @MuppetMasher has noted the official statement never says when the suspect's car left the UVU parking lot. Whether the rifle ever traveled onto campus in a backpack at all is one of the sharpest open questions in the investigation.

Walk the five recovery-area photos on this page first, then open the Other sub-cluster for related material, including images filed under Robinson's defense attorney. The weapon analysis lives at Tyler Robinson Weapon and Rifle, and the backpack argument is laid out at Backpack and Rifle Impossibility.
