The shorts are the significant detail. The charging affidavit describes the person who arrived on the Utah Valley University campus at 8:29 a.m. on September 10, 2025 wearing a plain maroon T-shirt, light shorts, light shoes and a black hat, and describes the rooftop suspect in dark jeans and a black long-sleeve shirt. Researchers arguing that the state's account requires an implausible sequence point to exactly this: a person in shorts carrying a pack that would also have to hold a rifle section, then jeans and a fuller pack an hour later.
