Stairwell Frame: Seen From Behind

Low-resolution security camera still from a high angle looking down onto a landing and stairs, showing a young male from behind walking down in a black long-sleeved shirt, dark pants, a backward baseball cap and a black backpack

What This Image Shows

The same stairwell from behind: a person descending in a black long-sleeved shirt, dark pants, a baseball cap worn backward and a black backpack, seen from a high angle looking down onto the landing.

The rear view is the one that carries the most information about the pack, and it is central to the identification dispute. Researchers argue that the pack in these frames sits close to full while the light blue pack carried from the campus parking lot that morning reads as roughly half empty, and that putting shorts into a pack and taking jeans out should reduce the volume rather than increase it. They also note that the cap style differs between the two sequences.

Those are arguments from published stills, not court findings, and the state's position is that this is one person who changed clothes. Look at this frame beside the front and three-quarter views in this cluster and in Stairs, then read Stairs Guy Identity Gap.
