Line of Sight Behind the Roof Lip

The narrowest objection to the rooftop firing position is also the most testable. As Sam Parker put it on X:

"When he comes to a stop, he's set up behind the 5 inch roof lip, lying flat. How did he have a line of sight downward into the courtyard when he's back from the edge of the roof, completely behind that lip, flat on the ground of the roof?"

The Geometry

A person lying prone has their eye roughly 8 to 12 inches above the surface they are lying on, and a scope-mounted rifle sits at about the same height. If a five-inch lip runs along the roof edge and the shooter is set back from that edge rather than pressed against it, then the lip does not simply block the view — it sets a minimum downward angle. The further back from the edge, the shallower the angle over the lip becomes, and the shooter's view lands progressively further out into the plaza rather than down into the courtyard where the stage stood.

Whether that geometry excludes the shot depends on four numbers, none of which have been published together:

  • The exact height of the roof lip where the position was.
  • The setback distance from the lip to the prone position.
  • The height of the roof above the courtyard grade.
  • The horizontal distance to the stage — public figures range from roughly 430 feet to varying yard-count estimates.

Given those four, the sight line is a single trigonometry calculation. Without them, the objection stands as an open question rather than a refutation.

What the Frame Shows

The annotated enlargement above marks the roof edge and places a dark object behind that edge, which is consistent with the prone-and-set-back description. What it cannot do is resolve depth. A low-resolution frame from an oblique camera angle compresses the distance between the object and the edge, so the same image is compatible with a shooter tight against the lip and with one several feet back. That ambiguity is why this page asks for measurements rather than declaring a conclusion.

Counterpoints Worth Stating

Several ordinary explanations would resolve the objection without any of it being suspicious:

  • The lip may be lower or absent at the specific firing position. Roof edges are not uniform, and the five-inch figure comes from a citizen estimate, not a published survey.
  • A shooter can press against the lip, resting the rifle on or immediately behind it. That is a standard prone-supported position and produces a usable downward angle.
  • Roof-to-courtyard elevation may be great enough that even a shallow angle over the lip intersects the stage area. The Losee Center roof sits well above the tiered courtyard.
  • The prone description itself comes from summaries of surveillance, not from a measured reconstruction, and may compress a more complex body position into one word.

Any of these would settle the matter. So would the reconstruction the State presumably performed, which has not been published.

Open Questions

  1. What is the measured height of the roof lip at the alleged firing position?
  2. What is the setback distance from the lip to the position, and does any single frame establish it?
  3. Has any party performed and published a sight-line reconstruction from the roof to the stage location?
  4. Do the wound trajectory and angle findings agree with a shot originating at that elevation and setback — see Wound Trajectory and Angle?
