Research notes in the master investigation file and citizen threads allege that Hardscape Specialties LLC — distinct from contractor Dan Merrell's Hardscape Utah firm — is the corporate shell behind UVU courtyard hardscape work after September 10, 2025. Two-firm puzzle
Citizen investigators flag two names:
- Hardscape Specialties LLC — corporate entity with Powell/Romrell ties (research record).
- Hardscape Utah / Daniel Merrell — on-camera paver installer (Merrell account).
Merrell's video does not name Hardscape Specialties LLC. Open questions include whether the LLC issued the work order, subcontracted Merrell, or represents a parallel reporting thread. Business filings and invoices would resolve the relationship.
Neither firm appears to be responsible for the earth removal that came first. Merrell says the courtyard was already dug out roughly ten inches by an unidentified state crew before any hardscape work started — see 10 Inches of Dirt Removed Before the Pavers. Whether Hardscape Specialties' work order covered that excavation, or only the pavers laid on top of it, is unresolved.
Why investigators care
If a revived dormant LLC with ties to state law enforcement and former UVU operations altered the homicide scene within days, authorization and chain-of-custody questions follow — without needing to prove criminal intent. UVU reportedly cited pre-scheduled work in some postures; CK notes claim evidence contradicts that framing. Neither UVU nor the Utah AG has released a full contract package as of public research compilations.
UVU and media silence
Per the research record:
- UVU spokesperson reportedly declined detailed questions after the shooting.
- AP reporting: UVU president cited pending external review when declining specifics.
- KUTV/KATV noted courtyard changes without always naming contractor or authorizer.
Defamation note
Michael Powell, Burton Romrell, and related officials are living persons. Allegations about revived companies and scene alteration are reported claims from open-source research, not adjudicated findings. We do not state that Powell, Romrell, or any employee participated in a cover-up or had foreknowledge of the killing.
