Distraction Events Timeline — September 10–11

Between the shot at 12:23:30 PM MDT on September 10, 2025 and the surrender that began around 9:00 PM MDT on September 11, roughly 33 hours elapsed. This timeline tracks what occupied those hours instead of the manhunt: one man's shouted false confession, at least two detentions that ended in release, two separate public "suspect in custody" claims that were both wrong, and a set of parallel weapon scares. Times are Mountain Daylight Time (MDT).

The people named here are, with one exception, living private citizens who were released without being charged as the shooter. Nothing on this page asserts that any of them coordinated with anyone. The one documented admission — George Zinn's — is described below in the terms police themselves used.

The Timeline

September 10 — the first hour

  • 12:23:30 PMCharlie Kirk is shot in the courtyard at Utah Valley University; the 66 seconds that follow are reconstructed on the minute-by-minute page.

  • ~12:24 PM — The figure on the Losee Center roof drops to the grass and moves north; the search has no confirmed direction of travel yet, a gap covered on the post-shot escape timeline.

  • Minutes after the shotGeorge Zinn, 71, shouts words to the effect of "I shot him, now shoot me" and is taken into custody — the first person detained in the case. Per the Utah County Sheriff's Office, he later told investigators he made the claim to draw attention away from the real shooter. July 2026 prelim coverage summarizes campus-officer testimony that radio traffic reported a suspect in custody almost immediately — a Zinn-driven false positive on the channel, not a confirmed shooter capture. This is the one on-the-record admission that distraction at the scene was real and not merely theorised.

  • ~12:26 PM — Per police audio summarised in the master file, the first radio report of a shooting is logged, three minutes after the shot; the scanner record is on the dispatch and radio timeline.

  • ~12:42 PM (+19 minutes) — A campus alert states a suspect is in custody. It was false. Researchers tie the alert to the Zinn radio detention. Roughly ten thousand students stayed put on the strength of it; who authorized the message remains unknown. The GRAMA thread on campus messaging is documented at UVU GRAMA warnings, the redacted UVU GRAMA records, and pre-shooting warnings.

  • Same hour — Zachariah QureshiZachariah Qureshi, 25, of Provo — a returned missionary who attended as a supporter, per DPS/NewsNation profiles — is reportedly detained near the scene. Commentary describes him as having been within roughly 25 feet of Kirk; family said mistaken detention. He was released and never charged as the shooter — the documented arc is exonerating. Fox and others named Zinn and Qureshi as ruled out the same night. Scanner narrations (Coleman / @whokilledck) place a Qureshi-linked hospital-to-hospital hunt on the radio before release; hospital staff, via officers on air, denied any such confrontation (dispatch / radio timeline).

September 10 — afternoon

  • Early afternoon — Utah DPS Commissioner Beau Mason states publicly that Zinn was taken into custody but cleared as the shooter the same day ("Shortly after the shooting, we did have a suspect in custody, George Zinn…"), an account tracked on the Utah DPS page.

  • Afternoon — A parallel weapon scare runs on the Provo scanner: Pellet Gun Man, on a bicycle with an air rifle. Unrelated to the shooting, it nonetheless pulled units and airtime, as did the crowd threads around Curly Hair Man, USA-Chant Man, and the Badge Man "fake cop" claim.

  • Afternoon — An unidentified all-black-clothed figure is reported crossing a construction site north of campus, telling an excavator operator he was "just trying to get home safe after a shooting." That figure — described with a black trench coat, black mask, sunglasses, long dark hair and a small backpack — has never been identified. See Black Clothing Figure and all-black construction worker.

  • 4:21 PMFBI Director Kash Patel publicly announces a suspect is in custody. It was incorrect. The announcement is documented on Kash Patel's briefings and, in the Qureshi context, on the FBI's Qureshi page.

  • ~90 minutes later (approx. 5:50 PM) — The person named in that announcement is released without further public explanation. Commentators ask whether the premature announcement paused the search and handed the actual shooter a ninety-minute window. That is an allegation about consequence, not a findingno public CAD log has confirmed a stand-down; see the suspect manhunt page.

  • Evening / social-media afterlife — The public narrative begins shifting toward the eventual charged suspect. Separately, after Qureshi's release some social threads continued a "Muslim shooter" frame despite same-night clearances — misdirection that is itself part of the distraction window. Coverage patterns for the day are catalogued on September 10 breaking news and FBI press conference media.

September 11 — the second news cycle

Aftermath of the distraction actors (2026)

  • Jan 29, 2026George Zinn is sentenced on obstruction and two counts of sexual exploitation of a minor under Utah's indeterminate scheme (media report maximum range up to 15 years concurrent). The CSAM counts are court facts about Zinn's separate criminal exposure; they do not, by themselves, prove who assigned him any role on Sept 10.

  • 2026 reporting on payment / TPUSA claimsCandace Owens and others have reported Zinn told hospital staff he was paid to act as a decoy and had not been paid yet / did not know by whom; that payment claim remains unverified in official charging narratives, and commentary also notes Zinn denials or alternate trauma explanations. A @DiligentDenizen interview clip is cited online for Zinn saying he worked for TPUSA — attributed claim only; TPUSA is a living organization and the employment claim is not established as fact here. Separately, @DiligentDenizen (July 2026) amplified prelim commentary that Agent David Hull described Robinson meeting "TPUSA representatives" on 9/10 — see TPUSA and the Tyler Robinson chat; do not treat that as proof of a Zinn–Robinson joint plot; it is a cross-link only.

Conflicts and Disputed Points

Point in disputeVersion AVersion BWho asserts each
Was a suspect in custody at 12:42 PM Sept 10?Campus alert said yes; radio had just carried Zinn detentionNo shooter was in custody; first detainee was Zinn (false confession)The UVU alert versus every subsequent official account; radio→alert chain is researcher inference

Effect of the false announcementInadvertent error under pressurePaused the manhunt for ~90 minutesOfficials have not addressed it; no public CAD stand-down log; pause theory is allegation, not a finding
Was Zinn coordinated?Officials treat his obstruction as real but uncoordinatedCitizen posts frame him as a placed element (payment, CSAM leverage theories)Utah officials versus X commentators; Zinn himself reportedly denied being paid, attributing his actions to a traumatic reaction

Open Questions

  1. Who authorised the 12:42 PM campus "suspect in custody" alert, and on what information?
  2. Who was the person the FBI Director referred to at 4:21 PM, and what were the grounds for the detention and the release ninety minutes later?
  3. Do dispatch logs show units being pulled off the perimeter after either false custody claim, and for how long?
  4. How many minutes did the Zinn arrest occupy responders and cameras during the window in which the shooter left the area?
  5. Was the all-black figure described by the construction crew ever identified, and does any released footage show him?
  6. Why has no surrender footage from the Washington County Sheriff's Office been produced, given the number of cameras normally covering such a lobby?

Laws (Charlie Kirk)

The complete CAD and dispatch logs for September 10–11 showing unit assignments during and after each false custody claim, the detention and release paperwork for every person held that day, the FBI's internal record behind the 4:21 PM announcement, the UVU alert-authorisation record for the 12:42 PM message, the booking and interview file for George Zinn, and the Washington County Sheriff's Office lobby video for the evening of September 11 are things the Charlie Kirk Investigation Laws may result in powerful truths coming out that aren't out yet.
