FBI Involvement & Announcements Timeline

This page follows one actor: the FBI, from the August 2025 change of leadership at the Salt Lake City field office through the announcements of September 10–12, 2025, the halting of parallel inquiries by other agencies, the ballistics handoff after the ATF returned an inconclusive result, and the discovery and records fights that followed. Nothing here establishes that any named official committed a crime; the entries are timestamps, public statements, and documented disputes. Tyler Robinson is charged and has pleaded not guilty — he has not been convicted, and every framing on this page should be read against that.

The Timeline

Before the shooting

• February 2025 — Mehtab Syed is appointed Special Agent in Charge of the FBI's Salt Lake City field office, the office that would later run the case — background on the SLC Field Office.

• August 2025 — Syed is replaced by Robert Bohls amid broader FBI leadership changes under Director Kash Patel. The change lands roughly a month before the shooting, which is why it appears in Pre-Event Personnel Swaps alongside the hospital and judicial appointments made in the same window. Personnel timing is documented here as timing only. Some commentators (e.g. @SeanMcCarthyCom) describe Syed as "fired" rather than reassigned; the page records the leadership change without adjudicating the label. Citizen accounts also note Bohls's reported cyber specialty and question how digital "chatter" later attributed to the case was not intercepted earlier — timing commentary, not proof of misconduct.

• Sept 1, 2025 (claim) — Citizen researchers report an Israeli-IP Google search spike on Bohls' name, and a July 9 spike on Syed's, from Google Trends data. Trends data cannot identify individual searchers; see Israel IP Search Patterns.

September 10, 2025 — Day of the shooting

• 12:23 PM MDT — Kirk is shot at UVU. The FBI takes a lead federal role almost immediately; the scene response is covered on FBI Investigation and in the ten minutes after the shot.

• Afternoon (reported) — The FBI reportedly seizes interior footage from Timpanogos Regional Hospital while the campus manhunt is still active — Hospital Footage Seizure and Hospital Footage and NDAs. The medical and death timeline covers what was happening inside the building at that hour, and the separate question of whether a nearer Level II facility was passed is on trauma center bypassed.

• Afternoon — early POIs (reported) — Zachariah Qureshi is detained and, per multiple accounts, publicly presented as a suspect in custody, then released roughly an hour and a half later without a public explanation. Citizen reconstructions (e.g. @TheCKFiles1) map a tighter window: Director Kash Patel reportedly characterizing a "subject in custody" around ~4:21 PM, a weapon find around ~5:40 PM, and a release around ~5:59 PM — timestamps that need primary-clip verification. Commentators argue the premature announcement may have paused the wider search; that is an inference, not an established fact. His profile as a distraction figure is on Zachariah Qureshi, and Kash Patel's briefings collect the statements. Qureshi was not charged.

• Afternoon — Qureshi / scanner layer (claims) — Police-scanner breakdowns circulating online (e.g. @iluminomoly) describe confusion over vehicle descriptions, including a Nissan Armada later associated in commentary with FBI presence, and name Qureshi and Andrew Piskadlo among people detained or questioned. Separate reports claim Qureshi was seen driving hospital-to-hospital and that a long rifle was associated with a vehicle stop, and that local LE was told the FBI would handle the stop — reported scanner/commentary claims, not adjudicated findings. Fox News and other outlets named Qureshi and George Zinn among early persons of interest who were ruled out / released; the wider reversal cluster is on the distraction events timeline.

• Afternoon — George Zinn (parallel early POI) — George Zinn was arrested after a public false claim of being the shooter. Later public accounts describe an obstruction case and a January 29, 2026 sentencing on obstruction (with separate, non-assassination counts reported in secondary summaries). Officials treat the Zinn episode as unrelated to Tyler Robinson as the charged shooter. Logged here as an FBI/local early-POI announcement layer, not as an alternate-assassin finding.

• Afternoon–evening — bomb dogs (expanded claims) — Candace Owens has stated that the FBI did not want bomb dogs taken to certain areas of the scene. Beyond that single claim, citizen researchers (e.g. @MeOhMyTruth, @SallyResearch) add a micro-timeline: K9 activity near the library ~3:04 PM; dogs not permitted near the tent; dogs failing to alert on the wooded rifle cache later associated with the official find; and later courtyard / Fugel Gateway K9 movement. The claim is documented on Bomb Dogs, on bomb dogs kept away, and folded into the six-item anomaly convergence list. No public agency after-action report resolves these claims.

• Reported, same day — Witnesses including Skylar Bard have described federal agents asking them to delete phone video. This is a witness allegation, not an adjudicated finding — see FBI Asked to Delete Video and Witness Footage Pressure.

• Reported — The FBI's shooting-reconstruction team is described as delayed reaching the scene because agency aircraft were in use for the director's travel. Reported by Steve Cameron and others on X; no official confirmation exists. Scene condition in those hours matters because of the later paving of the site.

September 11, 2025 — Photos, press conference, and custody

• 6:25 PM MDT — Court documents cited by attorney and commentator Baron Coleman place a Mirandizing of Tyler Robinson at the Washington County Sheriff's Office. This is the pivot point for everything that follows on this page — Baron Coleman's early turn-in argument and the Mirandizing timeline.

• 7:17 PM CDT (6:17 PM MDT) — disputed — Coleman argues the second set of stairwell photos was released while Robinson was already in custody and being Mirandized. The dispute is documented on Enhanced Suspect Photos, enhanced photos released after custody, and the cover-up section's version.

• 7:55 PM MDT — Per an AP-based timeline, the FBI says it is looking for a "person of interest" and releases photos of a figure in a hat, sunglasses, long-sleeved black shirt and backpack, plus rooftop video — Black Clothing Photo and the Losee Center.

• 7:57 PM MDT — The alleged Discord "confession" messages appear — about ninety minutes after the 6:25 PM Mirandizing time. The conflict is the whole subject of Discord Custody Timeline and the custody vs Discord timeline.

• Sept 11, daytime (Bohls podium) — Widely shared video clips (e.g. @ThePatriotOasis, @gaye_gallops) show SLC SAC Robert Bohls stating that investigators had found the weapon, palm prints, and footprint impressions, and calling for identification of the person responsible. Attribute as public SAC remarks during the manhunt messaging window — distinct from mere attendance at the evening conference.

• 7:58–8:00 PM MDT — The Utah County press conference releases the "enhanced" stairwell images and the rooftop video. Attendees reported include Governor Spencer Cox, Lt. Gov. Deidre Henderson, Director Kash Patel, Deputy Director Dan Bongino, Utah County Sheriff Mike Smith, and SAC Robert Bohls. Patel attended but did not speak — FBI press conference media. Public misidentification cascades from the enhanced photos (including internet "IDs" of living people later ruled out) are a documented side-effect of the release cycle; handle any named misID with care.

• 8:02 PM MDT — Washington County Sheriff Nate Brooksby says he received a call from a retired deputy about the suspect's identity. Critics note the sheriff's office had, on Coleman's reading of the documents, already Mirandized Robinson 97 minutes earlier — Washington County Sheriff.

• 8:04 PM MDT — Brooksby is said to have called Sheriff Mike Smith, who was reportedly standing at the press conference at that moment. Both times are drawn from official statements; the tension is raised by citizen investigators such as Gray Hughes and Coleman.

• ~9:00–10:00 PM MDT — Robinson turns himself in with his parents; Utah County officer Brian Davis is listed as the arresting officer at 10:00 PM. Coleman's drive-time argument — a 3.5-to-4-hour trip from Utah County — is on the arrest and booking affidavit timeline.

September 12–17, 2025 — The manhunt narrative

• Sept 12, ~6:00 AM MDT — President Donald Trump announces a suspect is in custody.

• Sept 12, ~7:00–7:30 AM MDT — Patel publicly characterizes the search as a "33-hour manhunt." Measured from 12:23 PM Sept 10, 33 hours lands at about 9:23 PM Sept 11 — roughly three hours after the 6:25 PM Mirandizing time in the documents Coleman cites. From 6:25 PM the elapsed figure is closer to 30 hours. See the Kash Patel manhunt timeline.

• Sept 15, 2025 — Patel states on Fox News that DNA on a towel around the rifle and on a screwdriver found on the rooftop matched Robinson. Earlier CNN reporting on September 11 had placed the screwdriver near the rifle, and the September 16 charging documents reportedly omit the screwdriver entirely — Official Narrative and Gun Discovery Sequence.

• Sept 17, 2025 — Brooksby holds a press conference reaffirming the 33-hour manhunt and the 8:02 PM and 8:04 PM calls. Coleman argues the account cannot be reconciled with the 6:25 PM document; the sheriff's office has not publicly responded to that argument.

• Reported, "I'll see you in Valhalla" — Patel's early podium remarks, including the Valhalla reference and the number 33, drew sustained criticism, including from Buckley Carlson — the Buckley Carlson video and Valhalla as a location page.

Blocking other investigations

• ~Sept 16, 2025 (claim) — Russell Brand says two cabinet-meeting sources told him that about six days after the death, Patel, Tulsi Gabbard and Vice President JD Vance said the administration was "not looking at foreign involvement" and "not looking at any accomplices domestically." Second-hand and unverified — Russell Brand's cabinet claims.

• Fall 2025 (reported) — Joe Kent, then director of the National Counterterrorism Center, was reportedly investigating whether foreign powers were involved, and that inquiry was shut down. Reporting attributed to the Daily Mail describes Patel as angry that Kent went through FBI material on the case — Joe Kent Halt, Patel shut down the Kent probe, and Joe Kent Foreign Inquiry Shutdown.

• Reported — Local law enforcement was told it could not conduct its own investigation, and parallel intelligence-community work was halted — CIA Block, CIA Blocked, and White House Halt of IC work.

• Reported — Witness interviews by other bodies were blocked or discouraged — Witness Interviews Blocked and FBI Witness Coordination.

• Claim — Owens has stated that the FBI's Connecticut office, which she describes as sharing space with the ADL, was sent to work the Utah investigation. Unverified — FBI Connecticut and the ADL floor-sharing claim.

Ballistics and forensics

• Recovered at autopsy — One bullet jacket fragment and four lead fragments. The jacket is identified as .30 caliber class — ATF Fragment Inconclusive.

• ATF result — The jacket shares class characteristics with the Mauser 98 attributed to Robinson, so the rifle cannot be excluded, but the fragment lacks individual characteristics permitting identification to one rifle. The ATF summary is, in its own words, inconclusive — ATF Inconclusive Ballistics. The defense has signalled it will use the state's own ATF report as exculpatory.

• Handoff to the FBI (disputed) — Citizen researchers reading the filings allege the FBI took up Comparative Bullet Lead Analysis (CBLA) — a technique the FBI itself abandoned in 2005 after concluding it had "flawed scientific, statistical, and interpretive validity," and which underpinned wrongful convictions such as the Jimmy Yates case. Whether CBLA is actually being run in this case is contested, not established — Ballistics ATF/CBLA and Ballistics Sealed CBLA.

• Jan 9, 2026 — A defense motion objects to the State proceeding with Virtual Comparison Microscopy on the jacket fragment and unspecified metallurgical testing of a lead fragment, after requests to photograph the fragment in its current state and observe testing were denied. An FBI analyst who received the fragment from the ATF noted part of it had become detached in the packaging — FBI Ballistics Forensics.

• July 2026 — preliminary hearing (open-court forensics) — According to hearing summaries circulated on X, the medical examiner's autopsy (single GSW, homicide) was admitted, and the ATF toolmark result remained inconclusive on the jacket fragment versus the recovered Mauser — the fragment cannot identify or exclude that rifle at the individual level. Defense highlighted the state's own ATF report; the State relied on DNA, video, and alleged confessions. Expert and industry rebuttals (e.g. ammunition-tech commentary on Cor-Lokt jacket-separation theories) continue in public discourse. Tyler Robinson remains charged and not convicted. • Ongoing — Standard tests researchers say were skipped, including gunshot-residue testing, are catalogued on Forensic Tests Skipped and No GSR and Physical Tests.

Records, discovery, and disclosure

• Spring 2026 — The case stalls over discovery. Commentators argue the case should not proceed until material said to be withheld is produced — FBI Discovery Delays, FBI and ATF discovery withholding, discovery and Brady disputes, and the discovery and Brady evidence timeline.

• Ongoing — Requests for the Washington County surrender video were refused, and the office later said the video had been deleted under a 30-day retention policy, while pleadings suggest footage does exist in law-enforcement hands — Sheriff Video Withheld and the bodycam GRAMA response. • Ongoing (claim) — Archive services and platform records relevant to the case are described by researchers as being purged or taken down. These are claims by investigators, not findings — Archive.is Purge and Videos Deleted Remotely.

• March 27, 2026 — Sheriff Brooksby resigns without a stated public explanation. The timing is noted by researchers; no cause has been established — Brooksby's resignation and Institutional Resignations.

Open Questions

1. What time, to the minute, did each FBI photo release go out, and what was the internal authorization chain for each?
2. Did the bureau know Robinson was in custody at the time of the 7:55–7:58 PM releases?
3. What exactly was done to the stairwell images, by whom, using what tool, and is the unaltered original preserved?
4. On whose authority was the NCTC foreign-involvement inquiry ended, and in what written form?
5. Is CBLA, or any successor lead-composition method, actually being applied to the recovered lead fragments?
6. What happened to the recovered bullet jacket fragment between ATF custody and FBI custody, and how did part of it become detached?
7. Can primary clips confirm the ~4:21 PM "subject in custody" / ~5:40 PM weapon / ~5:59 PM release clocks mapped to the Qureshi cycle?
8. Does any FBI after-action log address bomb-dog exclusion zones, the ~3:04 PM library K9 window, or the wooded rifle cache search?

Laws (Charlie Kirk)

The unredacted FBI case file and Form 302 witness interview reports, the internal authorization and timestamp log for each suspect-photo release, the original unenhanced stairwell images and the enhancement work product, the written order that ended the National Counterterrorism Center's foreign-involvement inquiry, the complete ATF-to-FBI chain of custody for the bullet jacket fragment, and the Washington County surrender video are things that the Charlie Kirk Investigation Laws may result in powerful truths coming out that aren't out yet.
