Press Conferences & Official Statements Timeline

Almost everything the public believes about September 10 was set at a podium, not in a document. This timeline follows the official statements in order — who spoke, what they said, and what the public timeline looked like immediately afterward. Twice within nine hours the FBI told the country a suspect was in custody and then said he was not. Each entry notes what changed, because the sequence of statements is itself contested evidence. No official named here has been found by any court to have done anything wrong.

September 10 — The First Six Hours​

  • 12:48 PM Sept 10 — UVU issues the first official communication of any kind: a campus emergency alert reporting a shot fired toward a visiting speaker. It named no victim and no suspect (UVU administration response).

  • 1:02 PM Sept 10 — President Donald Trump posts about the shooting on Truth Social — the first national-level acknowledgment, and it came from the White House rather than from Utah (September 10 breaking news).

  • ~1:30 PM Sept 10 — Orem Police and UVU campus police provide the earliest on-scene characterizations to local media; the "one shot from an elevated position" framing enters circulation here (Orem police response, UVU campus police).

  • 1:37 PM Sept 10 — UVU announces campus closure and urges evacuation.

  • 2:01 PM Sept 10 — UVU reverses to a secure-in-place instruction, a change citizen timelines flag as evidence the threat picture was still unresolved (UVU social media response).

  • 2:40 PM Sept 10 — Trump confirms Charlie Kirk's death on Truth Social — again ahead of Utah officials and ahead of the medical examiner (medical and death timeline).

  • 4:00 PM Sept 10 — Governor Spencer Cox holds the first Utah press conference and calls the killing a "political assassination," the phrase that framed all subsequent coverage (Utah officials timeline).

  • 4:21 PM MDT / 6:21 PM EDT Sept 10 — FBI Director Kash Patel announces on X that "the subject for the horrific shooting is now in custody" (NBC News cites Patel X status ~1965903392934633587; national outlets often list the Eastern clock). Two unrelated individuals had been briefly detained; the statement was wrong (Kash Patel briefings).

  • 5:59 PM MDT / 7:59 PM EDT Sept 10 — Patel follow-up post (NBC/Politico cite status ~1965928054712316363) states the subject in custody has been released after interrogation. The whiplash between 4:21 and 5:59 MDT (~90 minutes) is the origin of much of the public's distrust of subsequent federal statements (FBI's official narrative).

  • 7:59 PM MDT Sept 10 — The FBI releases rooftop and escape video of the alleged shooter. The low quality of the release, on a campus with high-definition coverage, became its own controversy (UVU HD footage withheld, selective 4K release).

September 11 — Manhunt Messaging​

  • 6:00 AM Sept 11 — Trump tells Fox & Friends he believes "with a high degree of certainty" the killer is in custody — a statement no Utah or FBI podium had made and that no public surrender yet supported.

  • 7:00 AM Sept 11 — Officials announce overnight forensic recoveries: the Mauser .30-06 rifle, footwear impressions, a palm print and a forearm impression (FBI ballistics and forensics).

  • 9:58 AM Sept 11 — FBI Salt Lake City releases the first two person-of-interest photos (SLC Field Office).

  • 10:44 AM Sept 11 — The FBI announces a $100,000 reward, formally signaling that the suspect was still unidentified (suspect manhunt).

  • ~5:30 PM Sept 11 — Per the FBI.gov transcript of Patel's Sept 12 remarks, Patel said he and Deputy Director Dan Bongino arrived on scene at approximately 5:30 p.m. on 9/11 — hours before the evening podium.

  • 6:17 PM Sept 11 — Additional person-of-interest photos are released (enhanced suspect photos).

  • 7:55–7:58 PM Sept 11 — Officials say they are looking for a "person of interest" and release "enhanced" stairwell photos plus rooftop video — eight minutes before the alleged Discord confession timestamp and roughly ninety minutes after the disputed 6:25 PM Miranda video (custody and surrender timeline).

  • ~8:00 PM Sept 11 — The Utah County evening briefing. On the podium: Governor Cox, Lt. Gov. Deidre Henderson, Director Patel, Deputy Director Bongino, Sheriff Mike Smith, and FBI SAC Robert Bohls, who led it. Over 7,000 tips and nearly 200 interviews are reported (official statements). In the FBI.gov Sept 12 account, Patel said that at his direction the FBI released never-before-seen video and new images during this governor-led conference.

  • ~8:00 PM Sept 11 (the silence) — Utah reporters noted that Patel was present but did not speak at this briefing. Critics later argued the silence is meaningful given the Miranda timestamp; there is no public explanation either way (FBI press conference media coverage). Citizen posts in 2026 recirculate behind-the-scenes / day-after briefing footage in which officials still present the suspect as not in custody (e.g. @CrystalSmallen tagging @baroncoleman).

  • 8:04 PM Sept 11 (the collision) — The probable-cause statement says Sheriff Smith received Brooksby's surrender call at 2004 hours — while Smith was standing at this briefing (Miranda vs Brooksby account).

September 12 — The Arrest Announcement​

  • 6:00 AM Sept 12 — Trump announces publicly that a suspect is in custody, before Utah's formal release (broadcast TV networks).

  • Sept 12 morning / Orem press conference (FBI.gov remarks as delivered) — Patel characterizes the case as a manhunt resolved "in less than 36 hours, 33 to be precise," and states the suspect "was taken into custody at 10 p.m. local time" on Sept 11. Viral podium clips (e.g. @ReturnOfKappy) show him first saying ~36 hours then correcting live to 33. Counted from the 12:23 PM shot, 33 hours ends at 9:23 PM Sept 11 — three hours after the Miranda timestamp and about 90 minutes after the Discord messages (manhunt timeline).

  • Sept 12 (Cox podium — "33 hours") — At the arrest press conference, Governor Cox stated he had been "praying for 33 hours" that the killer was not "one of us," then said it was — a high-circulation line (e.g. @CalltoActivism) that puts the same 33 figure on both the governor's and the FBI Director's podiums the same day. Cox also framed the moment as a "turning point for our country."

  • Sept 12 (framing) — In the same period Patel used the phrases later criticized by commentators including Buckley Carlson — the "Valhalla" reference and an emphasis on the number 33 — remarks the FBI has never publicly explained (Patel and the Valhalla remarks).

  • 5:00 PM Sept 12 — The Utah County Attorney's office issues its official press release announcing the arrest and stating that formal charges would be filed by noon on September 16 (case overview).

  • Sept 12 (casings) — Governor Cox publicly describes the engraved cartridge inscriptions, quoted by Deseret News — the first time motive language entered the official record (Deseret News).

September 15–17 — Charging and Consolidation​

  • ~Sept 15–16, 2025 — Per NBC News and Politico, Patel later defended the Sept 10 custody posts: he said the wording was not a "mistake," that he "could have been more careful," that the person detained was not the person later arrested, and that he did not regret the premature announcement — a second layer of controversy about federal messaging.

  • Sept 15, 2025 — Patel appears on national television and revises the screwdriver account: originally reported by CNN on Sept 11 as found near the rifle, it is now described as found on the roof bearing DNA. The item then vanishes from the charging documents entirely (FBI evidence footage).

  • Sept 16, 2025 — Utah County Attorney Jeffrey S. Gray announces the charges — Aggravated Murder, Felony Discharge of a Firearm Causing Serious Bodily Injury, and Obstruction of Justice — and files the Notice of Intent to Seek the Death Penalty (prosecution team).

  • Sept 16, 2025 — Tyler Robinson makes his first court appearance by video before Judge Tony Graf in Provo and is held without bail. He is charged, not convicted (Fourth District Court).

  • Sept 17, 2025 — Sheriff Nate Brooksby holds a press conference re-affirming the 33-hour manhunt and describing the 8:02 PM and 8:04 PM calls — the account investigators later contrast with the Miranda filing (Washington County Sheriff). He gave no further podium account before resigning in March 2026 (Brooksby's resignation).

Later Statements That Changed the Record​

  • Late 2025 — A gag order and sealing regime narrows what any official may say, moving the information flow from podiums into filings (gag orders and sealing, court gag orders).

  • Late 2025 – 2026 — Washington County tells records requesters the surrender CCTV no longer exists and, in a GRAMA appeal, that no bodycam was recording — a records position, not a podium statement, that contradicts the impression left by the September briefings (missing surrender footage).

  • July 2026 (preliminary hearing) — Under oath, Gray corrected a location he had misstated at an official press conference, testifying he was at a budget meeting in Layton, Davis County — not Ogden (Preliminary Hearing).

  • 2026 (press posture) — Coverage of the trial consolidates around filings and hearings rather than briefings (trial press, post-assassination investigations).

  3. Why did Director Patel attend the Sept 11 evening briefing without speaking?
  4. What is the origin of the "33 hours" figure, and against which two timestamps was it calculated — the 10 p.m. official arrest claim, the Miranda clock, or something else?
  5. Why did both Cox and Patel use "33" on the same Sept 12 podium cycle, and was that figure coordinated?
  6. Why did the screwdriver move from "near the rifle" to "on the roof" and then out of the charging documents entirely?
  7. Are transcripts and internal drafts of each briefing preserved, and will they be produced in discovery?
