Pellet Gun Man Detention - Watermarked Repost

What This Video Is​

One minute twenty seconds, vertical, handheld. This copy is distinguished from its siblings by a persistent watermark reading "@GuilderOficial" with a verification checkmark, sitting over the frame throughout. That watermark is the only provenance marker on the file. It tells us which account this particular copy passed through; it does not tell us who shot the original, and the account is not the original photographer.

The practical point for anyone evaluating this footage: what you are watching is a repost of a repost. The capture is genuine bystander video, but by the time it reached this file it had been through at least one redistribution account that added its own branding. Nothing has been added that changes the content - no caption argument, no cuts that we can detect against the longer variants - but the chain of custody is not clean, and there is no way from this file alone to reach the person who was standing on that street.

What Is Said​

One line of speech, from the person filming:

You see his gun? That's his rifle.

That is all. This cut has lost the earlier passage that survives on the longer variants ("I think they just found the guy..."), so the viewer arrives at the identification without the narrator's preceding reasoning. Stripped of its lead-in, the line reads more like a statement of fact than the on-the-spot guess it was.

That compression is worth naming plainly, because it is the mechanism by which a bystander's uncertain impression hardens into a claim as footage travels. The narrator is at distance, across a street, watching an officer walk past with a long-barrelled object. According to the investigation's own record, the item associated with this detention was reported to be a .177 pellet break-barrel air rifle. Neither the narrator nor the frame can settle that; the narrator's words are evidence of what a bystander believed, not of what the object was.

  • 00:00 - 00:06. Close on the detained man being placed into a police SUV; slight right-to-left pan.
  • 00:06 - 00:10. Zoom out and pan left, revealing a parked bicycle and several officers on the sidewalk.
  • 00:10 - 00:33. Medium handheld shot of an officer, name tag DUDLEY, kneeling and searching a green reusable bag while others stand nearby.
  • 00:33 - 00:50. Pan right then back left across the scene, including an officer carrying a long gun.
  • 00:50 - 01:05. Medium-wide of the whole scene, multiple patrol vehicles, emergency lights running.
  • 01:05 - 01:10. Abrupt cut to a different angle showing onlookers in a parking lot, one man in a red shirt filming.
  • 01:10 - 01:20. Cut back and zoom out to a wide street shot; ends.

On-screen and in-frame: "provo POLICE" decals on the patrol vehicles, a Cannondale mountain bicycle, a green reusable shopping bag, and the "@GuilderOficial" watermark. The detained man wears a white t-shirt, dark pants and a light cap with "FOOTBALL" lettering; he is handcuffed and cooperative throughout.

Note the two abrupt cuts at 1:05 and 1:10. The longer variants of this footage run those passages continuously, which suggests this copy has been trimmed rather than merely re-encoded. Nothing is obviously missing, but it is not the full capture.

The detained man is not named on this page and has never been publicly identified.
