What This Video Is
Eleven seconds of handheld phone video, filmed from an elevated position looking down onto the outdoor plaza at Utah Valley University. It carries no posting account, no upload date and no caption. The file sits in the investigation's own capture archive under the bare filename running1.mp4, which means it should be read as an anonymous copy of somebody else's original capture, not as a sourced publication. The footage has not been published to IPFS, so it cannot be played on this page yet; a single frame stands in for it.
There is no speech in the clip. An automated transcription pass returned one garbled fragment and nothing else — the microphone is registering crowd noise and footfalls, not words. Nobody narrates, and nobody is interviewed. Whatever this clip is worth, it is worth as a picture, not as testimony.
What The Footage Shows
A dense crowd — on the order of a hundred or more people, most of them apparently of student age — moving fast and in the same general direction across grass and concrete walkways. Some are sprinting. A handful are sitting still on concrete steps, watching. Backpacks, summer clothing, a promotional tent with a canopy, a concrete light pole and a trash can are all in frame. The letters "UVU" are legible on a building facade at background left.
Shot by shot:
- 00:00 - 00:03 — The camera holds a static elevated position looking down at the plaza. People are already running, in no organised pattern. A slow pan to the right begins.
- 00:03 - 00:07 — The pan continues. More of the crowd comes into frame, still moving right. A concrete light pole passes through the centre of the shot.
- 00:07 - 00:11 — The camera settles on a wider view of the right-hand side of the plaza, where the crowd is dispersing into open ground.
One caution about this page's own source material. The automated visual description originally filed with this clip suggested the scene "resembles a flash mob" or "possibly a promotional giveaway." Nothing in the frames supports that reading, and it does not survive contact with the companion clip running2, whose audio has a bystander saying "it's a gunshot, I think." The machine-written guess has been left out of the analysis above. What the footage actually establishes is narrow but real: at some point close to the shooting, a very large crowd on this plaza broke and ran, and it was filmed from above.
