What This Video Is
Eleven seconds of shaky handheld phone video, filmed from an elevated vantage point over the courtyard at Utah Valley University. It comes with no posting account, no upload date and no caption, and sits in the investigation's own capture archive under the filename running2.mp4. It is an anonymous copy of somebody else's original capture, and should be weighed accordingly. The footage has not been published to IPFS, so a still frame stands in for the player.
Unusually for a clip this short, the audio is worth as much as the picture.
What Is Said
One voice, close to the phone, unidentified, on-device transcription of the full eleven seconds:
Bro. It's a gunshot, I think.
That is the whole of the speech. It matters because of what it is: a bystander working out, out loud and in real time, what the noise he just heard was. He is not certain — "I think" — and the sentence arrives while people around him are already running. Recordings that catch the moment of recognition rather than the moment of the event are rare, and they are useful for two separate purposes: fixing the clip's position on the clock relative to the shot, and testing accounts of how the sound registered to people standing in the crowd rather than to a microphone on the stage.
Readers should note the limits. The speaker is not named, the clip is not timestamped, and one person's ear is not an acoustic analysis. What the audio establishes is that at least one person in this crowd read the sound as gunfire and said so immediately.
What The Footage Shows
A wide, high, unsteady view over the courtyard. Dozens of people of apparent student age are running, jogging and walking fast in several different directions across grass and concrete. Others stand still on the upper balconies of the background building, watching. Backpacks, t-shirts, hoodies and sneakers; a blue and red canopy tent; concrete trash receptacles; ornamental trees. A banner on the background building carries the partially visible letters "UVU."
Shot by shot:
- 00:00 - 00:01 — Shaky high-angle opening on a concrete pergola and lawn, several people already running across the grass. A fast pan right begins.
- 00:01 - 00:04 — The pan opens out to a wider view of the courtyard, dozens of people scattering across grass and walkways, onlookers visible on the balconies above.
- 00:04 - 00:07 — The pan continues past a blue tent and more of the crowd. The camerawork is erratic.
- 00:07 - 00:10 — The camera swings back left, re-framing the pergola as people keep moving. The recording ends abruptly.
Note what the frames do not contain: no rooftop, no figure on a roof, no shooter, no weapon. This is crowd behaviour after the fact. Its evidentiary weight is the audio line plus the direction and speed of the dispersal, nothing more.
