Pellet Gun Man (Provo)
In the hours around the assassination, citizen researchers and scanner-audio clips described an unidentified man moving through Provo, Utah, carrying an air/pellet rifle. He is one of the figures grouped under the "distraction" question because of where and when he appeared, not because of any established role. This man has not been publicly identified, and no public evidence ties him to the shooting.
What is reported
- The weapon described. The item was reported to be a Ruger Yukon Magnum .177 pellet break-barrel air rifle — an air gun, not a firearm.
- Movement. He was described as biking around the area rather than fleeing a single scene.
- Locations cited. Provo addresses circulated in discussion include the area of 44 S 200 W, a point on Freedom Blvd. roughly 50 feet south of West Center Street, and in front of Joe Vera's Mexican Restaurant (201 W Center St, Provo). A separate location, 2030 S 900 E in Salt Lake City, was also mentioned in connection with sightings. Notes also reference a mural on the side of Even Stevens Sandwiches in Orem (near North State Street / US-89 at ~1300 North) as a landmark cited while geolocating the clips.
Why it draws questions
A person openly carrying a rifle-shaped air gun through a downtown area, shortly after a shooting a few miles away, would predictably pull police attention and radio traffic. The open question is whether this was an unrelated coincidence — an ordinary person with an air rifle — or something that functioned as a diversion. Nothing public resolves that question, and the figure remains unnamed.
Open questions
- Who was this man, and was he ever identified or interviewed?
- How much dispatch and patrol capacity did the reports consume during the critical window?
- Is he the same person as the separate SMBB Break Man, or a different individual? Sources note they "may be different."
Status
Status: Unidentified. No named living person is the subject of this page, and no individual is accused of any crime.

Placement in multi-decoy rosters
Posts such as @SeanMcCarthyCom (September 2025) list an unknown bicyclist with an airsoft/pellet rifle arrested by local PD among four "distraction" actors. Public records have not named or adjudicated that person, so the figure is best understood as an unidentified process event — a detention involving a non-lethal, lookalike weapon near a mass-casualty scene — rather than as any named assassin.
