SMBB Break Man

A separate unidentified figure surfaced in police-radio discussion well north of Provo: a man who reportedly stated there was an APB out on him for the shooting at UVU. He is referenced in connection with "SMBB Break" — the Sorenson Molecular Biotechnology Building (SMBB) at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. This man has not been publicly identified, and no public evidence ties him to the shooting.

What is reported

  • His claim. Per circulated police-radio audio, the man said an APB was out on him "for the shooting at UVU."
  • Where. The reports place the encounter at the Urban Pioneer Cafe referenced alongside "SMBB Break." Notes flag an ambiguity: Urban Pioneer Cafe reportedly has both a UVU-campus location and a Salt Lake City location, so the exact site is unsettled. The Sorenson Molecular Biotechnology Building is at 35 S Wasatch Dr, Salt Lake City (University of Utah) — roughly a 43-minute drive north of Provo.
  • The reported "stand by" burden. Per the notes, the FBI reportedly wanted local officers to stand by with the man, which commentators estimate would tie up a patrol for roughly two hours without producing an interview.
  • The "don't interview" report. The most significant procedural claim is that officers were reportedly told not to interview the man. Audio circulated by citizen researchers includes the line, attributed to the radio traffic: "As per SBI and FBI, we've been given clear direction NOT to interview."
  • Possibly distinct from Pellet Gun Man. Sources note this man "may be different than Pellet Gun Man."

Why it draws questions

Two things make this report stand out: a man volunteering that he is wanted for the UVU shooting, and a reported directive that local police stand by but not interview — which, if accurate, would mean tying up a patrol for hours without generating a witness statement. The open question is whether the encounter was a diversion, a confused bystander, or a misread of routine radio traffic. None of that is resolved publicly.

Open questions

  1. Who was the man, and was he ever formally interviewed by any agency?
  2. Was there in fact an instruction not to interview, and who issued it?
  3. How long were local officers held at the location, and what else was happening during that window?

Sources

  • Citizen-research compilation of police-radio audio and location details, drawn from public commentary and reporting. Only non-accusatory description is presented here.
  • The "do not interview" radio line is also referenced in a Project Constitution video titled to the effect of "FBI Ordered Local Police Not to Interview Witnesses," cited in the master file. The video's framing is the poster's; this page treats the directive as a reported claim to be verified against dispatch records.

Public commentary

This figure continues to appear in citizen distraction / early-suspect discussions of the UVU event. No court has adjudicated criminal guilt related to the Kirk homicide, and any "he was part of the hit" language circulating on social media remains an unverified allegation, not a finding. Related context appears in the Distraction Overview and Proof Not Tyler sections.
